Side Effects in Sowa Rigpa
It has been mistakenly stated by some that medical treatments in Sowa Rigpa do not produce side effects. While it is true that Tibetan Medicine offers safe and effective therapies when guided by a competent practitioner, and that many turn to traditional medicine to avoid the serious side effects produced by pharmaceuticals, improper holistic treatment can certainly lead to a number of side effects based on foundational humoral principles.
For this reason, it is essential to follow the recommendations of a qualified Sowa Rigpa practitioner when seeking therapeutic support. Self-diagnosis and self-treatment, while quite en vogue in capitalistic direct-to-consumer culture, often produces undesirable health effects by inadvertently throwing off our physiological equilibrium.
Side effects cover two categories - those based on ineffective treatment, as well as those based on effective treatment. In the latter case, humoral imbalances are simply replaced with alternative humoral imbalances, usually because treatment relied upon the powerful actions of herbs against a set of symptoms without addressing the underlying constitutional or contextual circumstances of the patient.
